What is Chiropractic Neurology?

Chiropractic Neurology is quite simply a chiropractor with a special interest in the intricacies of the neurological system and the treatment of dizziness, balance and coordination problems, headaches and migraines.

The primary goal of your brain is movement. Your brain uses your eyes, your ears and the feedback from your muscles and joints to create a 3D map of your body and your environment. All movement is based on these sensory maps. If you’re suffering from pain, dizziness, balance or coordination problems this may be due to a physical lesion or it may be that your brain is having trouble creating these sensory maps and healthy movement patterns.

Your brain and nerves are highly adaptive throughout your lifetime. As a child this allows you to learn to walk, talk and play. As an adult it allows you to learn new skills. It also allows us to heal remarkable well from injury. However, sometimes this adaptive response is incomplete and occasionally it can work against us. Sometimes pain nerves become increasingly painful after injury, or dizziness results in chronic anxiety and stress, this is where we may be able to help.

What about pain?

Pain is an important part of how the body works. It warns us about damage and harm. But pain can be caused by all sorts of different things, and sometimes the pain signal is out of control. Some pain is caused by obvious trauma, a wound or impact, often it is caused by micro-damage in muscles or ligaments, such as the pain of muscles exhausted by a poor posture. Yet other types of pain are purely neurological, with the only changes occurring inside the structure of the brain. It is crucial to differentiate between the causes to be able to solves the problem.

The first goal in the treatment of pain is always to remove the painful stimulus. In some cases this is waiting for the damaged body part to heal, for example after a fracture. More often it involves correcting the movement pattern or posture which is causing stress to nerves, muscles or joints. If the pain has become chronic, the next step is to allow the brain to ignore pain signals once again and to return to its normal level of activity.

Chiropractic Neurology can be effective in the diagnosis and treatment of low back pain, neck pain, and sciatica.

Is Chiropractic Neurology for me?

Chiropractic Neurology treatment is safe and can benefit people of all ages; from young children to the elderly with osteoarthritis and everyone in-between. We adjust treatment techniques to reflect your lifestyle, complaint and activity level.

The Chiropractic Neurology appointments we offer are longer than a standard Chiropractic session to allow for a more in-depth neurological history and examination to take place and the prescription of exercises.

What to Expect

Assessment

Your initial consultation will begin with a full health history to enable your chiropractor to learn more about the condition for which you are seeking help and any other health concerns. This will be followed by a physical examination tailored to your needs and with a neurological focus. During the examination the health of the nervous system will be assessed by testing sensation and movement from the head and body. This provides information on the how the brain, brainstem and spine are functioning.

Report of Findings

Following your examination your chiropractor will talk through their findings with you and discuss a proposed plan for treatment going forward. This will include details on the techniques that will be used, how long treatment is likely to take to see a significant improvement in your symptoms and how long it may take to rehabilitate movement, balance and posture to prevent recurrence of your symptoms.

If X-rays, other imaging or further testing is required, your referral options will be discussed with you at this point.

Treatment and Exercises

Once you are happy with your treatment options and have had any questions answered, your first treatment can start. The assessment will have identified which areas of the nervous system are working too much, too little or are having trouble integrating information. The goal of treatment will be to repetitively stimulate the neurological pathways that travel to or from the affected area. With enough intensity and repetition this should start to create ‘plasticity.’ You will need to perform daily home exercises to facilitate this. They normally will take 5-10 minutes twice per day.

Jake Cooke, Chiropractor in New Malden

“I went to Jake with a bad back and hips and it turned out he was a specialist in many more things! He explained very clearly and in ways I could understand how neurologically my brain was feeling the impact of high stresses at work and in turn this was affecting not just my back but my balance, mood, productivity etc etc. He put my mind at rest about so many things and gave me a comprehensive plan to get better….which I most definitely have! Would very highly recommend.”

Mr F, 46, self employed

“I recently visited the clinic in New Malden as I was suffering from acute BPPV. Jake was able to pinpoint the cause of my condition immediately and clearly articulated the required cause of treatment. I was particularly impressed with Jake’s knowledge of the condition and was able to treat me accordingly. Excellent service, and would recommend to anyone – thanks for fixing me!”
